I like a good debate over a topic or philosophy. But in my experience with online chat rooms and forums, they are anything but a debate. Most of the time, debates that involve highly controversial topics end up being more arguing, insulting, and unfounded judgments against people we have never met.

One such debate topic is the war on terrorism, another is religious beliefs. I love a good philosophical discussion. A debate is meant to be civilized with each side taking a look at the pros or cons and supporting their particular side in some way. There are ethics involved in true debates. One such ethical rule of thumb is that the debate should stay on the topic and not become a personal attack.

All too frequently I have seen these personal attacks take place on the web in the guise of a debate. Words like idiots, ignorant, stupid, and several much more foul words are used as personal attacks on the opposition.

I have got into these debates hoping to sell my side of the issue. I have learned that it is not a winning situation. Online debates, if someone is inclined to join one, should be closely moderated and the rules set forth at opening of the topic. There should also be a limited amount of time for the debate. Limiting the time would help to prevent frustrations that may lead to personal attacks.

If you wish to join one of these debates, be warned that they may not be playing nice.
