Re:De-evolution of Society? - 06/28/2007 Okay. I'll bite.

How about: they see their future and determine they need to back up and re-route or face annihilation?

How about: they religiously believe that they have reached the pinnacle of society and have the command from God to head back the other way?

How about: they discover things that were lost in their past--certain creativities, talents--that require them to reverse course in order to reclaim them?

Just throwing out ideas in hopes they'll kindle something.

Let us know where you go with this

Re:De-evolution of Society? - 01/04/2007 Well, related and unrelated... here's my take on the whole idea:

Have you ever read / watched The Village? (SPOILER WARNING!) Basically, its a story in which a town, seemingly primitive, isn't what it seems. You'd think the story took place a hundred years ago, but it's actually set in modern times! The villagers are lied to, pretty much...

Why? IMO, it is sometimes necessary. It brings back innocence in some ways. Because things that were once taken for granted are suddenly greatly valued, it brings true human values back to the table. Things that were dull are suddenly alive and magnificent, and things that were once valued seem so superficial and unnecessary.

What, for example, would we do without the Internet? I have personally come to rely on it for recreation, work, communication, and research. But what would I do if the Internet didnt exist? Maybe I'd get off my ass and visit friends instead of emailing / IMing, and I might go for a walk in the park once in a while. And one day, when my friends are gone and my legs are weak, I'll really regret not doing the things that should've been done... things that I took for granted.

I suddenly feel like going for a walk to visit a friend...

De-evolution of Society? - 01/03/2007 Hey guys. Got a question (really a premise, almost) for all you creative sorts:

Many stories and books center on society or cultures de-evolving due to catastrophic events - nuclear war, pandemics, aliens playing shoot-the-human.

What are some of the reasons a society would choose to de-evolve?

(Yep, I have an idea for a book/story but am still a little fuzzy on if it will work or not so thought I'd ask y'all what you thought.)
