Re:Continuous Writing - 10/31/2006 Luke disembarked the 747 at the Bangor, Maine airport. From here he would be catching a company flight bound for the oil rig.

He thought about Sue and called the hospital back home to check her progress.

According to the nurse, she had joined therapy groups, but as yet was not speaking. Selective mutism, he ran the words over in his mind. They assured him it would likely only last a day or two.

"I feel like I left a sinking ship," he admitted to the nurse.

"I understand you feel that way," the nurse replied "but she is exactly where she needs to be. We would like a way to reach you in case of an emergency."

Luke gave the nurse the information she needed, and after being connected to several other offices was finally able to relieve himself of his responsibilities to his sister for a little bit.

(hey guys, what's the last name for these people?)

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/31/2006 Sue could hear the slamming of the door and the sound of Luke's car as he drove off. "I'm alone again. I'm always alone." She thought as she continued to weep, sprawled out upon the floor, the forgotten knife lying just out of reach. "I should end it all. I'd just have to reach out for the knife. Kill Luke, kill myself, what does it matter. But I'm just so tired."

Without even the energy to move, an eon seemed to pass and all Sue could do was stare at the knife while tears rolled down her cheeks onto the cold floor. That's where the police and paramedics found her.

"It looks like whoever called this one in knew what they were talking about. This one is almost catatonic. I'm glad we could get here before she decided to do something with that thing. Man, that is one huge knife." And with that statement, the bored paramedics strapped Sue down on a crash board and took her off to the hospital for evaluation. The young police officer just silently shook his head in agreement and continued to fill out his paperwork. As the ambulance pulled away in a flash of lights and wailing siren, the officer finally spoke, as if addressing the now silent apartment. "At least this time, nobody died."

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/25/2006 This was a nightmare. He couldn't think of a worse way to leave things with his sister. She'd always been treated like an invalid. But he knew with him gone and the right help, she would become stronger. It was almost like a scene out of "The Glass Managerie".

Luke didn't look back as Sue yelled after him. He got in his car, started the engine, and floored it. He must have burned rubber for half a block before he felt he was safely away.

"I've got to have a life." he yelled as his eyes turned upward in an angry prayer.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/24/2006 Just as she raised the knife to stab his back, he turned around and caught her arm in time.

"What are you doing?!?" Luke shouted. "Have you lost your mind?"

Sue crumbled to the floor and weeped. Luke pulled the knife out of her hand and put it on top of the cabinet, out of reach.

"Look," said Luke, refusing to look in Sue's direction. "I gotta go..."

Racing upstairs to his room, he grabbed his already-packed suitcase, put on his coat, and proceeded out. Realizing he'd forgotten something, he walked back to the nightstand to grab the tarnished, silver frame which housed a faded photo of Mom, Sue, and Luke.

Racing downstairs, he reached the landing. Door ajar, he took one last look at Luke. She was still weeping on the ground when he closed the door behind him.

Outside, he drew in a deep breath of fresh air. He knew he couldn't leave Sue in there by herself. God knows what she might do to herself. He retrieved his cellphone from his coat pocket and dialed a number.

"911, What is your emergency?"

Luke sighed. "Hello, I'm at 72 Corner Street. There is a suicidal female in the house. Thank you."

He hung up before the dispatcher could ask any further questions.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/24/2006 "DON'T YOU DARE WALK OUT ON ME! I CAN'T BE ALONE! I WON'T BE ALONE AGAIN!" Sue shouted at Luke's retreating back. Suddenly all of her fear and pain crystalized into a seething anger. She raced after Luke's receding figure. In passing, her hand reached out and grabbed the carving knife which lay in the sink of soaking dishes.

It was almost as if her arm, and the knife, possessed a life of their own.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/23/2006 "Please don't do this to me after what we have gone through together."
"Look, Sue. If I don't go, we'll have to starve. I really don't want to lie to you."
Luke couldn't bear to look at her anymore. He walked out of the room before he even waited for her to reply.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/22/2006 "Look, we really need this money, and sooner or later, you're going to have to learn to stand on your own two feet". He really hated to take the hard line, but if he didn't, she'd wallow in the pity pot for the rest of her life.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/21/2006 "Oh no. No! Please tell me you are not going to do this to me," Sue beginning to cry uncontrollably. Luke was at loss of what to do.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/19/2006 "Sis, I know we've had a lot of problems and things are tough, but I've got something I have to tell you. I have to leave. I know it will be really hard for you alone, especially with your trouble at work, but I've finally found a good job. I've gotten a job as a mud engineer for British Petroleum. I'll be working on an offshore rig in the North Atlantic. I need to leave at the end of the week." With this rush of words Luke unburdened his soul. His eyes pleading for acceptance, Luke mutely stared into Sue's face.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/17/2006 (oh boy, antryg... i don't like where this is going!)

Images flashed in Luke's mind. Getting laid off... the car crash leading to the death of Sue's mother.... the devasting news that Sue had received from her job...

It was all too much. But it had to be done. The hurt would only worsen with time. Luke took a deep, shaky breath.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/16/2006 As Luke saw the tears in Sue's eyes, the burden of guilt upon his back became that much heavier. "She thinks things are going so well. I can see the pride in her eyes. How can I tell her that I'm leaving?"

With a heavy heart burdened by guilt, Luke's eyes also shed tears.

Re:Continuous Writing - 10/16/2006 "It's hard but not impossible. I'm glad that you stay by my side all this while. Without you, I couldn't have survived this time."

They looked into each other's eyes. Tears welled up in Sue's eyes as she reflected on what they had gone through in the past few months.
