V is for Vendetta - 08/16/2006 Normally this is the type of film that I love. The trailers promise plenty of action, the lead actress is one that I like and there looks to be a great plot with political overtones. So why didn't I go and see the movie in the theatre?

I'm not sure why I missed the first go round of this film. I know I didn't get any comments or feedback from friends or workmates. It seemed to be in the theatre for a short time as well. It could also be chalked up to my being cheap, but that's only if you talk to one of my sons.

This has all been a very roundabout way to say that I needlessly deprived myself from seeing a great film. Plot, dialogue, acting to resonance with real life were excellent in every facet. I unabashedly gush over this movie after seeing it now that it has been released to DVD. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to purchase the DVD. It will be one which I periodically view. Since I only own 3 other, nonmusic, DVD's, that should tell you that it is a movie that I esteem.

If others wish to talk about particular scenes or the acting; then this is a great place to do so. What I would like to address right now is the central message of the movie.

The movie is based on a graphic novel which was written in the '80's to sound a cautionary alarm to government power and control in Great Britian. Politics and war being cyclical, we now find ourselves in much the same state as then. Unfortunately, the triggering event of a "terrorist" action and a subsequent governmental power grab seem more likely today than anytime in the recent past.

Depending upon your political views, much in this movie may be the cause for cheers, jeers or a chorus of amens. It's a movie that's supposed to be fun and escapist. Instead it is one that makes you think. The plot, the acting, the dialogue are all done so well that one can "believe" that this is true and could/is happening today.

Of course many will take this in as just a popcorn movie. It has the Hollywood happy ending where the good guys win. You know who to cheer for and it works. But if it seems too real to you, if you seriously believe that something like this could happen; then it will make you think long and hard about personal responsiblity and action.

Maybe that's why I didn't hear a lot of buzz about this movie. Maybe that's why it didn't stay in the theatres a long time. Maybe it just made people too unconfortable or introspective to talk about it much.

If you missed it in the theatre, then take the time to see it now on DVD.
